The Achievement Mindset, Part 1

Recently, after going to an on-line business building “bootcamp,”
I made some interesting observations when I returned to the
work-a-day world, where the time clock and hard work “by the sweat
of your brow,” sent me on an odyssey that even Napoleon Hill would
agree with, if I could have the opportunity to sit with him, and
discuss these musings.

Napoleon Hill was an American author who was one of the earliest
producers of the modern genre of personal-success literature.

His most famous work, Think and Grow Rich, is one of the best-selling
books of all time.

Hill stated in his writings that people are free to believe what
they want to believe, and this is what sets the United States apart
from all other countries in the world. Hill’s works examined the
power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success.

“What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve” is
one of Hill’s hallmark expressions. How achievement actually occurs,
and a formula for it that puts success in reach for the average
person, were the promise of Hill’s books.

Hill called his success teachings “The Philosophy of Achievement”
and he considered freedom, democracy, capitalism, and harmony to be
important contributing elements. For without these, Hill demonstrated
throughout his writings, personal beliefs are not possible.

He contrasted his philosophy with others, and thought Achievement
was superior and responsible for the success Americans enjoyed for
the better part of two centuries. Fear and selfishness had no part
to play in his philosophy. Hill considered them to be the source of
failure for unsuccessful people.

The secret of Achievement was tantalizingly offered to readers of Think
and Grow Rich. This secret was never named directly as Hill felt
discovering it for themselves would provide readers with the most benefit.

Hill presented the idea of a “Definite Major Purpose” as a challenge
to his readers, to make them ask of themselves “in what do you truly
believe?” For according to Hill, most people had no firm beliefs,
putting true success firmly out of reach.

Hill’s numerous books have sold millions of copies, proving that
the secret of Achievement is still highly sought-after by modern
Americans. Hill dealt with many controversial subjects through his
writings including racism, slavery, oppression, failure, revolution,
war and poverty. Persevering and then succeeding in spite of these
obstacles using the philosophy of Achievement, Hill stated, was the
responsiblity of every American Hill’s Life and Works

Hill was born into poverty in a two-room cabin in the town of Pound
in rural Wise County, Virginia. His mother died when he was ten years
old. His father remarried two years later.

At the age of thirteen he began writing as a “mountain reporter”
for small-town newspapers. He used his earnings as a reporter to
enter law school, but soon had to withdraw for financial reasons.

The turning point in his career is considered to have been in
1908 with his assignment, as part of a series of articles about
famous men, to interview industrialist Andrew Carnegie, one of
the most powerful men in the world, at the time.

Hill discovered that Carnegie believed that the process of success
could be elaborated in a simple formula that could be duplicated by the average person.
Impressed with Hill, Carnegie commissioned him to interview
over 500 successful men and women, many of them millionaires,
in order to discover and publish this formula for success.

As part of his research, Hill interviewed many of the most
famous people of the time, including Thomas Edison, Alexander
Graham Bell, George Eastman, Henry Ford, Elmer Gates, John D.
Rockefeller, Charles M. Schwab, F.W. Woolworth, William Wrigley
Jr., John Wanamaker, William Jennings Bryan, Theodore Roosevelt,
William H. Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Charles Allen Ward and Jennings
Randolph.

The project lasted over twenty years, during which Hill became
an advisor to Carnegie. As a result of these studies, the Philosophy
of Achievement was offered as a formula for rags-to-riches success
by Hill and Carnegie, published initially in 1928 as the book The
Law of Success.

The Achievement formula was detailed further and published in
home-study courses, including the seventeen-volume “Mental Dynamite”
series until 1941.

From 1919 to 1920 Hill was the editor and publisher of Hill’s Golden
Rule magazine. It was during this time he wrote a letter to Charles
F. Haanel in which he praised his book The Master Key System.

In the letter he writes: “..I believe I ought to inform you that
my present success and the success which has followed my work as
President of the Napoleon Hill Institute is due largely to the
principles laid down in The Master Key System.”

In 1930 he published The Ladder to Success. From 1933 to 1936 Hill
was an unpaid advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt.

In 1937 Hill distilled the Philosophy of Achievement and produced
his most famous work, Think and Grow Rich, which is still in print
in several versions, and has sold more than thirty million copies.

In 1960, Hill published an abridged version of the book, which for
years was the only one generally available. In 2004, Ross Cornwell
published Think and Grow Rich!: The Original Version, Restored and
Revised, restoring the book to its original content, with slight
revisions, and added the first comprehensive endnotes, index, and
appendix the book had ever contained.

From 1952 to 1962 he worked with W. Clement Stone of the Combined
Insurance Company of America to teach Stone’s “Philosophy of Personal
Achievement”, and to lecture on the “Science of Success”.

Partly as a result of his work with Stone, he published Success Through
a Positive Mental Attitude. He died in 1970 in South Carolina, and in
1971 his final work, You Can Work Your Own Miracles, was published
posthumously.

We learn from Napoleon Hill’s famous books. By following the
principles included therein, undoubtedly the
Achievement Mindset can be won.

Your Dog Is Your Greatest Therapist

mukunda22

My dog, Mukunda, is my greatest therapist. He teaches me how
to love every waking moment. When I sleep, I dream about him,
and he imparts his nonverbal messages of wisdom to me telepathically.

My life with Mukunda has become the central, most pivotal and
joyous part of my life. I’ve decided he loves me more deeply
than I’ve ever been loved before. This is no small realization.
This love grows more profound every day.

My moment to moment perception of Mukunda has become more
lucid and alive. As he romps and chases the ball in the pasture,
I sometimes look at him and close my eyes, so as to capture him
in a moment of beauty and magnificence.

It never fails– that microsecond glimpse of the most handsome
face I’ve ever seen does not cease to enrich my feelings of hope
and happiness. Mukunda is the happiest soul I have ever met.
And he, in turn, teaches others the lesson of what it means to be happy.

His antics are hilarious! and never to be forgotten, revered
memories, making laughter an easy act of expression.

One day, he went to visit his dog/God-mother, who has a life
sized monkey doll perched in the corner of one of the chairs
in her living space. She had given Mukunda a tasmanian devil
toy as a gift. We took turns throwing it for him. He sensed an
end to the game after an hour of toss and retrieve, and he took
the devil and placed it at the monkey’s feet looking back at
us with a laugh.

He got the reaction he was looking for! It would have been great on camera.

Most recently, Tom was mowing the pasture by the meandering
Conestoga. He moved Mukunda’s toys to an already mowed area so
he could mow the tall grasses without obstacle. When he came around
full circle, Mukunda had moved all of the toys back to the direct
path of the tractor. He stood in front of the tractor coming towards
him, pant/laughing, obstructing the flow, earning an award for perseverance!!

Three balls soared into the river in one week, recently, when the
waters were still cold from the winter. Mukunda ran along the river
bank, watching the current take them downstream, perhaps to be found
again on our first canoe trip of the season.

Since that time, balls mysteriously materialize on our walks. Recently,
we were walking through a development behind the hospital where I work
and Mukunda hopped into a wooden area and emerged with a medium sized
yellow ball, like a magician who materializes and manifests his/her
desires effortlessly. There was a great ball throwing marathon for
the rest of that day.

And he stares at me and has developed the ability to make eye
contact at frequent intervals, often sidelong glances of devotion.

I love those moments of recognition.

I often think of people’s attitudes, in general about their dogs.
There are two women at work with whom I congregate and we rave
and swoon over our dogs. My one friend instructed me on how to
lightly nibble on Mukunda’s ear. I have been doing it ever since.

I explained to one of our secretaries my dog theory– in brief– that
dogs are enlightened beings. She stepped back and said something I
will never forget: “You look like a worshiper of Dog.”

We saw the play, Sylvia, written by A. R. Gurney last Saturday.
It was about a man named Greg, who found a dog called Sylvia in
Central Park. He brought the dog home to live with he and his wife.

His wife hated the dog. Greg, meanwhile, experienced a renaissance.
He walked the dog at all hours, watched the moon travel across the
sky, saw maple tree leaves silhouetted against the Manhattan skies.
He stopped going to work to be with the dog.

The audience loved the play. The theater was packed. At intermission,
the man sitting next to me announced he was like Greg’s wife,
and did not like his partner’s dog. He said: “Every night I put
her in a crate. I would never allow her to sleep with us, that’s for sure.”

His wife sat quietly.

I thought, yes, this is how people think not only of dogs, but of
the entire animal realm and also mother nature, which notoriously
is out of human control.

Dogs– are here to obey people.

Is the dog a good dog? Does the dog do tricks, fetch the newspaper
to bring the bad news of the day to an already burned out master or
mistress?

Do they return devotion to the magnificent beast, return the
unconditionality of love the dog has for them?

Humans believe they are superior to animals. This is ingrained
in spiritual and religious philosophies of our culture.

This is how dogs are viewed: as dumb animals. If a dog proves
his/her brilliance, people laugh at themselves for even one moment
seeing the greatness, the awesome power of the creature whom in
reality, is superior to humans.

I am the only person in Mukunda’s life whom he considers to be
a dog. He does not feel hurt if I scold him or mind if I get
irritated when he nudges my writing arm, as I write these words.
He thinks everything I do– is funny.

Last night, while watching a home video, he sprawled himself across
my chest and stared at me. Occasionally, he leaned over to lick my
eye, or bite my nose. If I said words to him, he cocked his head.

Naturally, he was nagging me to go out, but in a charming way.

Being seen as a dog is the greatest compliment of my life, given
me by Saint Mukunda, no less. All the compliments of the world are
shallow, by comparison.

Mukunda sees me as being one with him. He moves where I move, I
move where he moves. He lies on my feet with sun shining and illuminating
this writer’s page.

I am like Greg in the play, Sylvia. I was not awake before Mukunda
showed up. Now everyday thereafter is new and bright and simple.

The world continues to encroach with diversion and complexity, yet
Mukunda stands as the guiding beacon getting back to balance, to writing
on these pages, feeling the great creative life seethe inwardly and
outwardly to be realized any moment I wish to remember the Free Zone.

That is where all the dogs I have ever known and all the others are
now: in the Free Zone.

The Free Zone exists inwardly, as we meditate, and in the hazy
afternoons doing creative projects away from clock time and deadlines.

We will bring the Free Zone more and more into our experience
and reality and move about with the knowledge of this inspiring
place in our cells and every day memory. The dogs are there and
they know we are there, as well. We just do not know it, yet.

Mukunda knows The Free Zone.

We have to be electrocuted in the third eye before we come even
close to knowing true freedom.

Yet it’s there and your dog will show it to you.

Laws To Live By

My last article outlined the negative core beliefs
surrounding money, abundance and prosperity.

Law of Reciprocity

This universal law is like the law of gravity, the law of
attraction and the law of karma, in that it works whether
you believe in it, or not.

The Law of Reciprocity is when you reciprocate your mind to
be in the flow of divine laws, such as love, peace, joy,
happiness and freedom. Then and only then will divine
blessings rain great abundance unto you.

Pupil: “Could you give me something to memorize that will
help me to eliminate fear and doubt?”

Sage: “Yes. The thought I use most frequently myself is:
My mind is a center of divine operation. The divine
operation is always for expansion and fuller expression, and this means
the production of something beyond what has gone before, not
included in past experience, though proceeding out of it by an orderly
sequence of growth.

“Therefore, since the divine cannot change its inherent
nature, it must operate in the same manner in me:
consequently, in my own special world, of which I am the center, it will move
forward to produce new conditions always in advance of any
that has gone before.

“Entertain such thoughts as you feel are reflections of
The Divine.

“Whenever you feel that your way to freedom is obstructed,
make a stronger endeavor to live in the spirit of your
affirmation, and you will soon find your mind receiving
ideas which, if followed, will guide you into the path of absolute liberty.”

Doubt and fear separate us from the voice of inner
divinity thus placing us into lower vibrational fields of
lack and restriction.

I went to the Jim Edward’s Boot Camp for Online Business
Building at the end of January. The people there were subscribers to
Jim Edward’s Net Reporter Subscriber Only site on the web.

The networking that went on there was enlivening. We were
in conference together for 14 hour days, some of us for 3
straight days.

Now we stay in communication with one another through the
forum on the Net Reporter, through e-mail and continue to peruse
the prolific Net Reporter site.

One beautiful thing I noticed about everyone I spoke to
was the “Can Do,” “Will Do,” no limitation, have fun, love every
moment attitude, which is the cornerstone of the Achievor
Mindset: and everyone I spoke to was on this high vibrational plane
of reality, including myself!!

Back home, I was able to isolate three collective mantras
that permeate the workforce, the everyday conversations. These
mantras are a deeply ingrained negative mindset that lead to an early
grave: GUARANTEED!!

1) I’m poor–eg “I can’t afford that”, “the rich get
richer, the poor get poorer,” “what is yours is yours, what is
mine is mine,” “I am in debt,” “I can’t pay my bills,” I’m headed for the
poor house.”

You get the picture.

2) I’m old–eg “oh my god, I’m gonna be thirty next week,”
“80? That’s old,” Women never tell their age,” “You are really
55? You don’t look that old.”

You get the picture.

3) I’m sick–eg “I was born with a congenital condition,”
“I’m tired,” “I’m sick and tired,” “my mother died at 60–I’ll probably
die at 60, too.”

You get the picture.

After the Jim Edward’s Online Business Building Bootcamp,
the voices of doubt, of poverty consciousness, of ageism, and the
voices that tell me to fear old age or ill-health: have vanished.

The vision of wholeness and expansion are mine.

I encourage all of you to Feel Good and En-Joy!

Until next time!!

Transforming The Beliefs That Strangle Us

“Within you right now is the power to do things you never
dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just
as soon as you can change your beliefs.”

Dr. Maxwell Maltz
1899-1975, Author

“We don’t see things as they are–
We see things as we are.”

Anais Nin

“A belief is not an idea held by the mind–
it is an idea that holds the mind.”

Anonymous

Years ago, when I read the “Seth Material” by Jane Roberts,
Seth, the channeled entity who spoke through Jane, she advised
readers to change limiting beliefs in order to create a more
expansive reality in this lifetime.

I remember my family and friends discussing our various
beliefs and how to change our reality for the better.

We had discussion groups and explored beliefs, dreams and
responsibility.

We called one another on the phone to discuss our daily
challenges with these concepts.

And I look back on these moments of connection as a great
awakening.

Nowadays, I am reflecting on ways to take what we did back
in the 1970’s to a new level of achievement.

In order to purge destructive core negative beliefs, they
must first be recognized, blessed and released.

Limiting beliefs about money is a great place to begin.

Money is energy and likes it if we like it, just like
everything and everyone else in the universe.

Mandy Evans has collected some classic negative beliefs
about money, as presented in Dr. Joe Vitale’s “The Greatest Money
Making Secret Of All Time.”

1) Money is the root of all evil. (The actual quote is:
“the love of money is the root of all evil.”)

2) If I am successful, people will hate me.

3) If I make a million dollars, I might lose it, and then
I would feel stupid and hate myself forever.

4) There isn’t enough money to go around.

5) If I have a little more than enough to get by, someone
else will go without.

6) If I have alot more than I need to get by, lots of
people will have to go without.

7) It is better to take less, than be resonsible for
someone else’s hardship.

8) Democrats punish the rich.

9) Republicans punish the poor.

10) If I make alot of money, I would be betraying my father,
who never made much money.

11) The rich get richer.

12) The poor get poorer.

13) I am smart and talented, I should get more.

14) You should always use money well.

15) Money is hard to deal with.

16) Money is hard to get.

17) You have to work hard to get money.

18) To save money, you have to do without things.

19) Time is money.

20) I can’t have money and free time.

21) Money is not spiritual.

22) You have to do lots of things you do not like in order
to have money.

23) I do not have enough to share or give away.

24) Accepting money obligates me.

25) It is better to take less than my due and be free from
sticky situations.

26) To be a valuable person, I have to work more for less
money than other people do.

27) Having money stops you from being happy.

28) Having money complicates your life.

29) Money spoils you.

30) I will never have enough.

31) It is best if I just want enough to get by.

32) You get what you deserve.

33) Being super-conscious about every single penny is the
good–the right thing–to do.

34) Never buy anything you don’t need.

35) If you were a smart woman, you would be supporting
yourself
easily right now.

36) I always rent; owning a house would be too scary.

37) I would never be secure if I had to be responsible for
more than a hammock.

38) I have to own my own home to feel secure–unless I had
at least a yacht.

39) Worrying about money is tacky.

40) Daddy will like me better if I don’t spend too much.

41) I want to have alot of money when I grow old, so that
people will be nice to me.

42) I never want people to know I have so much money
because
people are really mean to rich people.

43) If I get paid alot, people will think I am a fraud.

44) Everybody wants more; when it comes to money, less is
better.

45) There’s someone else in side me that spends all my
money.

Money is a great place to explore limiting core beliefs
because it has button pushing potential.

People really believe the above (and more) statements, and
see these as absolute reality, instead as beliefs. When seen
for what they are, these beliefs can be changed.

You will be liberated, as a result.

The Art of Living

The Art of Living

The art of living can be practiced by the simplest
act of following ordinary impulses, trusting in the
moment by moment assistance of inner urgings that hold
the key to the fulfillment of destiny.

Our society warns against the following of impulses
in general because they go against a logical and rational
reason for action. And as children, most of us were
taught to tame our impulsive side, because it is
unsafe, even dangerous.

But in order to practice the art of living, I was
led to see that my spontaneous urgings were therapeutic steps
furthering creative expression–whether to change my
place of residence, to dance all night, to eat a particular
food, to write down an idea, or to simply pause a moment
and appreciate the new day.
